My Resource suggestions

What bible do i use?

I truly believe using a true paper Bible during your daily Bible study time is vitally important. As wonderful as Bible applications on your phone, tablet, or computer can be, these applications can become very distracting as well.

I came to know Christ in September of 2013, and since that time, I have used a variety of translations and Bible types (study Bibles, thin lines, parallel Bibles, and anything else you can think of). Through all the translations (including NIV, ESV, CSB, NLT, and NASB2020), my preference for my everyday carry Bible is the NKJV Maclaren Series from Thomas Nelson. I picked mine up on Amazon, linked below.

What devotionals do I use?

Bible study without some plan is like driving across the country without a map or GPS. You may get to your destination eventually, but it might not make any sense how you got there! Of course, you should always pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit before you ever open your Bible to study, but having a nice devotional (or seven) is a good way to extract more of God’s Word into your life. Below are the ones I use:

My Utmost For His Highest Updated Edition

The One Year at His Feet Devotional

The 365 Most Important Bible Passages For You

The One Year Christian History

The Bible Recap

Search The Scriptures

On top of these, I also use Tear Up Your Bible’s 365 Day Reading Plan

What about commentaries?

Bible commentaries can be an invaluable tool to helping understand God’s Word in a more precise and clear way…as long as they are the last portion of your Bible study. You should not rely solely on commentaries to do your study work for you. My favorite commentaries that I use on the show include:

Bible Knowledge Commentary (unless you are doing serious in-depth theological study, this is really the only commentary set the normal person will ever need)

John Macarthur New Testament Commentary

Charles Swindoll Living Insights New Testament Commentary

Christ Center Expositional Commentary

Study Bibles

Having a solid study Bible on your desk is vital to maintaining a healthy daily Bible study habit. A study Bible will help you with background information as you prepare to move from book to book in the Bible.

ESV Study Bible (considered by most to be the gold standard for study Bibles)

NKJV Study Bible (I have this one on my desk at all times and is my main study Bible)

Cultural Background Study Bible (perfect for learning about the cultural practices happening at the time of the book of the Bible you are reading)

Archaeological Study Bible (dive into the world of ruins and discover some of the great finds of the time period of the book of the Bible you are studying)

Wilmington’s Guide To The Bible (not a study Bible per se but an invaluable tool to have on your shelf when examining God’s Word)
